About Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments) to enhance a person’s health and well-being. There are dozens of types of massage therapy methods (also called modalities).

People seek massage therapy for a variety of reasons – to reduce stress and anxiety, relax muscles, rehabilitate injuries, reduce pain, and promote overall health and wellness.

There are tremendous benefits to be achieved through regular massage therapy treatments from a Registered Massage Therapist. Whether your need is to have a moment of relaxation, reduce muscle tension or attain relief from chronic pain, a therapeutic massage can enhance your overall sense of emotional and physical well-being.

Massage Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

How we help

What conditions do RMTs treat?

Massage therapy can be used for the treatment of both acute and chronic conditions. RMTs can work with a wide variety of patients, of all ages, in the treatment of illness, injury rehabilitation and disability.

Is massage therapy effective?

Massage therapy holds an important role in health care by acting directly on the muscular, nervous, circulatory and lymphatic (immune) systems. It is effective in the control of chronic or acute pain, in stress reduction, and in creating a sense of relaxation and well-being.

Will my insurance cover massage therapy?

Most extended health plans will cover massage therapy. Some will provide for a fixed number of treatments while others will allow for a fixed dollar amount to be used within a calendar year. MSP has some coverage for those on premium assistance and ICBC and WSBC will usually cover treatments for those on an active claim.

Do I need to undress for a massage therapy treatment?

It is not necessary to undress for a massage therapy treatment. It is important to feel comfortable in the setting and relaxation is key to a successful treatment. If it is preferred to stay clothed, your massage therapist can offer effective treatment through clothing. It is however most common for clients to undress at least partially for treatment. You will have privacy for undressing and draping over the body is used, with only the area that is being worked on uncovered.

What can I expect on my first treatment?

Your therapist will go over your health history and intake forms with you, clarifying any necessary information. They will recommend a treatment for your specific goals and answer any questions you may have. After this you will be given instructions for getting on the massage table. The therapist will leave the room and allow you to undress to your comfort level and get between the sheets on the massage table. Following the treatment your therapist will often give home care exercises or information relative to improving your condition.
